Tupelo, Mississippi
1935-1948

1938

Vernon Presley in prison ( May 25 1938 to February 6 1939)

Memphis, Tennessee
1948-1977

1951

Jazz diva Dinah Washington charted with “Harbor Lights,” reaching #10 R&B. The Platters would take it to #15 (#8 pop) in 1960, having carefully studied Washington’s version.

Elvis recorded it as his first Sun Session and Sam Phillips was not impressed, that would take 2 more songs.

Elvis’ recording would not be released until RCA’s The Legendary Performer and various Sun Collections; and might explain why Elvis thought of himself as a sort of jazz singer much to 1950s jazz musician horror. Elvis blended from everything, he was a musical sponge.

September 21, 1953 to March 19, 1954

Elvis worked at Precision Tool company, operating a drill press for $1.55 a hour.

The Sun Records Rockabilly Era

1955

Elvis performed at the Fair Park Coliseum, Lubbock, Texas.

Elvis is introduced as the ‘Memphis Flash’ and described to the radio audience by announcer Frank Page as wearing crocodile–skin shoes with pink socks. He performed ‘That’s All Right’, ‘Hearts of Stone’, ‘Blue Moon of Kentucky’, and ‘Fool, Fool, Fool’.

Elvis wore the same velvet shirt given to him by Natalie Wood, that he’d wore at the Tupelo Homecoming Concert, with a gold lame vest given to him as a Christmas present by Barbara Hearn.

Elvis performed the only sacred song ever done on the Sullivan show: Peace In The Valley for the Hungarian Revolution or maybe his mother.

Elvis was shot only from the waist up and at the conclusion of the show Elvis was thanked by Ed Sullivan by telling the audience: “this is a real decent, fine boy. We want to say that we’ve never had a pleasanter experience with a big name than we’ve had with you”. After the show Elvis took the midnight train back to Memphis.

At the end of the show, Ed Sullivan told the nation that Elvis was a “decent fine boy”; but the parental disapproval never went away, even after did 2 years of military service doing real service and costing the USA economy, big money in tax losses from him, the increase security of guarding a particular private and the cost of mail processed by the military.

1962

Elvis Presley had his third UK No.1 album with ‘Blue Hawaii’; it spent a total of 18 weeks at the top of the charts.

The Tokens once again had the #1 song as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” resided there for a third week. Chubby Checker’s “The Twist”, after reaching #1 in 1960, gained new popularity and was now up to #2 again two years later. “Run To Him” from Bobby Vee slipped a bit, Joey Dee & the Starliters had “Peppermint Twist” and Elvis Presley moved up to #5 with yet another big hit–“Can’t Help Falling In Love”. The rest of the Top 10: “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen” from Neil Sedaka, James Darren was down with “Goodbye Cruel World”, Leroy Van Dyke dropped with “Walk On By”, the Lettermen scored a Top 10 with “When I Fall In Love” and Ray Charles joined the group with “Unchain My Heart”.

1969
Elvis met with Felton Jarvis at Graceland. Unlike always, there was the suggestion to use Chips Moman’s American Studio at 827 Thomas Street in Memphis. Since George Klein, Marty Lacker and Red West had connections there and Elvis liked the idea of recording a few miles from home, the decision was made.

A collection of Elvis Presley memorabilia bought by a council worker who embezzled nearly £600,000 was set to be sold to compensate the local authority. Julie Wall, 46, from Rippon Drive in Sleaford, was jailed for three years for the offence last October. The collection – which included rare recordings and foreign pressings of Elvis songs, was to be auctioned off by a High Court receiver to provide compensation.
