Elvis Presley Documentary Headed for HBO
HBO has announced an as-yet-untitled documentary from Sony Pictures Television about the life and music of Elvis Presley.
By Colin Stutz

HBO has announced an as-yet-untitled documentary from Sony Pictures Television about the life and music of Elvis Presley.
Production on the three-hour, two-part feature is being wrapped this month, Deadline Hollywood reports. No debut date has been announced.
The documentary will span from Presley’s childhood through his final recording sessions at his Graceland Jungle Room studio in 1976. It is written by Alan Light and directed by Emmy and Grammy winner Thom Zimny, who has work on multiple Bruce Springsteen documentary and video projects, including last year’s The Ties That Bind and 2010’s The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town.
“The producers came to HBO and Sony with the idea for a film drawing upon very rare footage that captures Elvis’ musicianship in a new and exciting way,” said president of HBO Miniseries Kary Antholis in a statement. “The artistry on display in that footage reminded us of the great work by Jon Landau and Thom Zimny on HBO films documenting the studio artistry of Bruce Springsteen, and we are thrilled to have them at the helm to lend their unique cinematic perspectives to this iconic, complex and singular artist.”
The film is being produced with full participation of Presley’s family estate and will include never-before-seen photos and footage.

The Music Diaries | Rock, roll, religion - Elvis Presley's gospel side overlooked

Elvis Presley's early life and upbringing were grounded in poverty, after being born into a poor sharecropping family in Tupelo Mississippi on January 8, 1935. His depression-scarred father struggled to feed the family, and eventually had to move north in search of greener pastures in Memphis. It was there that Elvis became hooked on the music of pioneering black artistes being played on the radio, got immersed in black Memphis blues clubs, and absorbed the music of local impoverished black communities.
A roll call of Presley's close musical associates shows James Brown, bluesman B.B. King, Fats Domino, Sammy Davis Jr, Ray Charles, Rufus Thomas, Jackie Wilson, Johnny Mathis, Brook Benton, Billy Ward, Roy Hamilton and Mahalia Jackson - all negro artistes who have been photographed with Presley, and who have vouched to his non-racist leanings.
The real Elvis Presley was a deeply religious individual who had a compelling propensity for singing hymns and recording gospel songs.
I'll bet that the flooding of the Memphis airwaves with both black and white gospel, and Presley's early attendances at gospel concerts, must have influenced his decision to get into the recording studio to do gospel songs.
His triple-CD compilation album of 2000, Peace In The Valley: The Complete Gospel Recordings debuted at number 13 on Billboard's Top Contemporary Christian album chart in January 2001. Among his early gospel releases were Take My Hand Precious Lord, It Is No Secret, If We Never Meet Again and Crying In The Chapel - all done between 1956 and 1960.
Although the Rock 'n' Roll King achieved so much in that genre, ironically, his only Grammy awards were for gospel, in the category of Best Sacred Performance. They were How Great Thou Art (1967), He Touched Me (1972) and a concert recording of How Great Thou Art (1974).
And I'll again bet that Presley must have thought that a miraculous escape with his life in 1956 was due to his closeness to God. After appearing in Texas, he was in a hurry to reach his next engagement at The Nashville Studios on time and chartered a plane. It developed engine trouble, causing the plane to fall steadily to within a few feet above the ground before the problem was rectified. (SOURCE?)
Presley in fact died on August 16, 1977 at age 42, the same as the Jamaican music legends Dennis Brown and Peter Tosh.

Date With Elvis at Age 17 Changed My Life, Says Actress
Today we know Cassandra Peterson as the gothic horror hostess Elvira, "Mistress of the Dark," but before she was famous she was a young showgirl in Las Vegas. It was Elvis Presley, who she had a "sort of" date with 50 years ago, who pivoted her career in a different direction with "the best advice in the world." The actress recounted that fateful day in an interview with Closer Weekly.
"I was a showgirl in Las Vegas and Elvis told me to get the heck out of Las Vegas and pursue a singing career and, because he was Elvis, I decided to do that," Peterson said. "At the time I was the youngest showgirl in Las Vegas; I was 17. If it wasn't for Elvis, I would now be the oldest [showgirl] in Las Vegas, I'm positive."
Peterson said she had always been a massive fan of Presley and was "completely smitten" when they had their "sort of" date, according to Fox News. The 68-year-old did not go into detail but in a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, she dished on their alleged date.
"He invited me to a party at his suite, along with lots of other people, and he really kind of took to me, I think because I was 17, and probably all the other showgirls there were in their 30s," she claimed, adding that she had grown up with Elvis as her idol. "The fact that I was meeting him was beyond belief. We did hang out one whole evening, a whole night, the next morning, and mostly talked, believe it or not."
Peterson admitted there "was some kissing going on" but they were being closely watched and nothing else transpired. She added that Elvis "couldn't have been more wonderful" and she credited him for changing her life.
"I, at the time, thought I had reached the pinnacle of show business, becoming a Las Vegas showgirl. Elvis convinced me that this was no town for a young girl to be in, by herself, and that it would not lead to bigger and better things."

Elvis Presley’s Granddaughter Riley Keough Will Play a Rockstar in Amazon’s New Show ‘Daisy Jones & The Six’
By Stephanie Downs
Actor, and Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, Riley Keough, has another exciting TV opportunity on her plate. After garnering a Golden Globe nomination for her work on Starz’s The Girlfriend Experience, she’s returning to the small screen to portray Daisy Jones in Amazon’s upcoming adaptation of Daisy Jones & The Six, as reported by Deadline. The actor recently acknowledged her latest casting news by telling fans on Instagram, “I’m so honored to be your Daisy.”
Keough has made a major name for herself with her many, high-profile roles in various film and television projects. In addition to starring in The Girlfriend Experience, she has also appeared in Logan Lucky, Mad Max: Fury Road, and It Comes At Night. Interestingly enough, Keough has also made a recent appearance on The CW series Riverdale in 2018 after taking to Twitter to write, “I just want to be cast in Riverdale.”
Daisy Jones & The Six is a musical drama that follows the fictional band (that has many similarities to Fleetwood Mac) through its ups and downs. Jones is a singer-songwriter who has a tricky relationship with the frontman of The Six, Billy Dunne. The TV series is based on Taylor Jenkins Reid‘s bestselling book of the same name.
Deadline also announced that director Niki Caro has joined the show and will serve as an executive producer alongside Reese Witherspoon. Caro will also direct multiple episodes of the series, including the pilot. It was announced back in July 2018 (months before the novel would officially release in March 2019) that Daisy Jones & The Six would be coming to a TV screen near you. The Hollywood Reporter detailed that the show was picked up for 13 episodes at Amazon.
At the time, THR reported that Witherspoon said about the project, “As soon as I started reading Daisy Jones & The Six, I immediately fell head over heels in love with it, and I’m thrilled to be bringing it to the screen with Amazon and Jen Salke, whose passionate pursuit of the material spoke volumes.”
The head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke, also discussed the upcoming adaptation. “When I heard Hello Sunshine [Witherspoon’s production company] was developing Daisy Jones & The Six, I tracked down a copy right away and devoured it in one sitting. I loved it so much I had to take it off the market and bring it to Amazon Studios,” Salke said, per THR. “I was immediately struck by how perfectly it fit into our overall approach of bringing passionate creators and entertaining, compelling content to our Prime Video audience. Reese, Lauren and I are kindred spirits!”
There is no word yet on when Daisy Jones & The Six is expected to premiere.
