Certainly, even with the most advanced software and restroration skills, there will always be limitations when working with a substandard source.
Hopefully, you will hear a modicum of improvement on the before [raw] and after [restored] draft mix sample of "Down in the Alley" below.

That is a definite improvement, but the backing voices seem too low.

Yeah, it's just a preliminary mix; nothing is locked in yet.
The backing vocalists, though, are quite overpowering on the raw mix and do need toning down a little.
You may also note that there is some separation of the individual background singers [centre-left, centre-right] which helps - to some extent - to project a comparatively broader sound picture.

I didnt know the original track was faulty :/

The bass drops out at around 2:05-2:26 on the original mix [first heard on the 6363 Sunset FTD that came out in 2001].
