The Teddy Bears remained third with “To Know Him Is To Love Him” and the Everly Brothers reached the fourth position with “Problems”. The rest of the Top 10: Elvis Presley with “One Night”, Connie Francis burst into the Top 10 (13-6) with “My Happiness”, the Kingston Trio were headed southward with “Tom Dooley”, Clyde McPhatter asked “A Lover’s Question” at #8 and Billy Grammer’s “Gotta’ Travel On” skipped over “Whole Lotta’ Loving” by Fats Domino.

Elvis rents out the Memphis Memphian theater for another of his many all-night movie matinees, attended only by Elvis, his family, and members of the “Memphis Mafia.” Tonight, he views the as-yet-unreleased George C. Scott biopic Patton, which so mesmerizes the King that it becomes his favorite film, edging out the previous titleholder, Dr. Strangelove. As is his habit with a film he loves, Elvis will memorize every line, especially the famous opening “pep talk” the General gives to his troops.

On January 4, 1976, on the spur of the moment Elvis decided to fly to Vail, Colorado for a vacation with Linda Thompson and a party of seventeen. Among those in the group are, Joe Esposito and his girlfriend, Shirley Dieu, Jerry Schilling and Myrna Smith. After checking into a Denver Hotel, Elvis dispatches Joe Esposito and two Denver Police officers, Jerry Kennedy and Ron Pietrafeso to Vail to find enough rental accommodation for the group. Elvis spends the evening of his 41st birthday in a rental home on the slopes of Vail with Jerry Schilling and Myrna Smith, who have been living together for more than a year and will eventually marry.
Many of the guys and their wives and girlfriends have been taking skiing lessons, but Elvis wears a full face Ski mask during the day but mostly only appears on the slopes at night in a rented ski mobile, causing eighteen-year-old Susan Ford, daughter of the President to protest his violation of local regulations.

John Guerin, a prolific session drummer who worked with Elvis Presley, Elton John, the Beach Boys, Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rogers, Helen Reddy, the Everly Brothers, Bread, the Association, Joni Mitchell, Sheena Easton, the Monkees, Seals & Crofts, the Byrds, Willie Nelson, Todd Rundgren, Frank Zappa and Gram Parsons, among others, died from pneumonia in West Hills, California at age 64.
