NBC Red debuted “The Carnation Contented Hour”. The show was as a showcase for top singers and musicians.

Billboard magazine published its first record sales chart. Big band violinist Joe Venuti’s “Stop! Look! Listen!” was the first #1 record to be listed.

January 4, 1938

JD Presley and JG Brown stood sureties for Travis Smith and Lether Gable. Vernon spent six months in custody awaiting trial.

J.D. was still farming on Orville Bean’s land; Orville Bean was his landlord so it may have encouraged J.D. to stay on the ‘right side’ of the landowner.

1950

Two years after Columbia Records introduced the 33 1/3 RPM long-playing vinyl record, RCA announces that they will also start using the same format.
Elvis worked at Precision Tool company, operating a drill press for $1.55 a hour.

1953

Over 20,000 people jam the streets of Montgomery, Alabama, as Hank Williams’ funeral is held at the City Auditorium.

1954

Elvis went to the Memphis Recording Service in hopes of auditioning for Sam Phillips, not a gift for his Mother as was the publicity story during his career. Elvis Presley recorded “It Wouldn’t be the Same Without You” and “I’ll Never Stand in Your Way.” on a private demo disc, that he gave to the high school pal who loaned him the fee.

Marion Keisker did the recording and took down Elvis’ number with a note “good ballad singer”, and would later get Sam Phillips to call Elvis.

1957
Elvis Presley released the single “Too Much” b/w “Playing For Keeps.”
“Too Much” reached number one on both the Cashbox and Billboard sales charts and went to number three on the R&B chart.[6] The single peaked at number two on the then-named Top 100 chart, the main Billboard pop chart
“Playing for Keeps” reached number 34 in the United States

Elvis drove his Cadillac Eldorado to the Kennedy Veterans Hospital in Memphis for a pre-induction physical for his draft status.

The Soviet satellite Sputnik I fell out of Earth orbit after three months and burned up in the atmosphere. It had been launched on October 4, 1957 and was the first artificial Earth satellite.

After avoiding Elvis in 1970, FBI Director G. Edgar Hoover sent Elvis a note on January 4: “your generous comments concerning the Bureau and me are appreciated and you may be sure we will keep in mind your offer to be of assistance.”
Accompanied by Charlie Hodge, Sonny West, Richard Davis and Bill Morris, Elvis flew to Dallas, where he registered at the Royal Coach Motor Hotel under the name of Jon Burrows.

In a very good mood Elvis flew to Los Angeles on his way to Hawaii. Last November he was told to loose some weight and he and Red West each lost 25 pounds on a crash diet Elvis picked up in Las Vegas.

Elvis flew to Colorado for a vacation with Linda and a party of 17 other

First they checked into a Denver hotel, but Elvis dispatched Joe Esposito, Jerry Kennedy and Ron Pietrafeso to Vail to find enough rental houses and condos for the group.

Nielsen Music reported that sales of George Michael’s music skyrocketed in the days following his death last Christmas Day. The former Wham! singer sold around 477,000 albums and songs in the week ending 29 December compared to 17,000 the week before, an increase of 2,678 per cent.
The British Phonographic Industry announced that sales of David Bowie‘s album “Blackstar” helped push global sales of vinyl records to a twenty-five year high. Sales in the UK topped 3.2 million, an increase of a whopping 53 percent over last year.
