Vernon in prison ( May 25 1938 to February 6 1939)

1952

At the Skyline Club in Austin, Texas, Hank Williams gave his last scheduled performance. He sang publicly one more time after being persuaded to take the stage and sing a few songs at the annual dinner of the American Federation of Musicians on December 28. Williams died three days later.

September 21, 1953 to March 19, 1954

Elvis worked at Precision Tool company, operating a drill press for $1.55 a hour.

1955
At Sun Records, Carl Perkins records “Blue Suede Shoes”, a song that he wrote after seeing a young man get angry at his date for scuffing his shoes and after Johnny Cash had suggested the scenario. Even though today we more often hear Elvis Presley’s version, it only made it to number 20 on the Billboard Top 100 during a five week stay, while was Perkins’ original went to number 2 and stayed on the chart for 17 weeks.

Elvis went shopping in Memphis. He visited the jewelry store in the Peabody and the Lansky Brothers.

Elvis, Scotty, Bill and DJ performed a Memphis charity show at Ellis Auditorium to benefit the Memphis Press-Scimitar’s Goodfellows Fund and the Commercial-Appeal’s American Legion Basket Fund.

Elvis Presley had 10 singles on the Billboard chart, a record setting feat, which stood until 1964 when the Beatles had 14 simultaneous chart hits.

1957
The Presleys lived at Graceland: Elvis received an informal word from Memphis draft board chairman Milton Bowers, that his induction notice had been drawn and was waiting for him.

After girlfriend Anita Wood left him due to his romantic indecision, Priscilla arrived on a flight from Germany under the name Priscilla Fisher. She was picked up at the airport Idlewild in New York by Vernon and Dee. They accompanied her to Memphis.

Elvis picked her up at his father’s house. He wanted to show her Graceland for the first time by himself. He drove her past the annual Christmas display in the lawn, including the life-size Nativity scene that is still in use today. Priscilla was nervous, and Elvis prescribes some sleeping pills which leave her asleep for the better part of two days.

Elvis was interviewed by the Memphis Commercial Appeal and talked about Christmas time as well as in the past as in the present: “Everything is so dreamy when you are young. After you grow up it kind of becomes just real.”

1968
Colonel Parker and Elvis accepted a standard performance deal to appear at Kirk Kerkorian’s International Hotel, which was still under construction at the time. Elvis signed on for a four-week mid-summer engagement at $100,000 per week.

1970
Vernon and Priscilla tried to confront Elvis over his spending habits. Elvis became furious and left Graceland. He went to the airport and on board a plane for Washington D.C. Here, he checked into the Hotel Washington and tried to get in touch with Joyce Bova.
Shortly after, he left to fly on to LA via Dallas. Here Elvis called his limousine driver, Gerald Peters, and Jerry Schilling to arrange to meet him in LA. However he warned them not to tell anyone where he was.

1975
“Convoy” by C.W. McCall earns a Gold record. It would go on to top the Billboard Pop chart in early January. The novelty tune tells the story of interstate truck drivers and their run-ins with the law. It reached #2 in the UK. The movie Convey stars Kris Kristofferson, who would co-star in the third Star is Born remake with Streisand instead of Elvis.

1979
Elvis Presley‘s personal physician, George Nichopoulos, was charged with ‘illegally and indiscriminately’ prescribing over 12,000 tablets of uppers, downers, and pain killers for the Rock ‘n’ Roll star during the 20 months preceding his untimely death. Although he was acquitted this time, he was charged again in 1980 and again in 1992 and was stripped of his medical license in July 1995. He died February 24, 2016; and inspired the “Dr Nick” Character on The Simpson.

1987
The Pet Shop Boys had their third UK No.1 single with their version of ‘Always On My Mind. The duo had performed a version of ‘Always on My Mind’ on Love Me Tender, an TV special commemorating the tenth anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death, their performance was so well-received that the group decided to record the song and release it as a single.

1992
Whitney Houston’s single “I Will Always Love You” sold a record 399,000 copies in one week, breaking the record set by Bryan Adams’ single, (“Everthing I Do) I Do For You” a year earlier; remaining remained #1 on the R&B chart for the third straight week and the new #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. And Ms. Houston made it a triple with her fourth week at #1 overall with “I Will Always Love You”. Shai continued as runner-up for the fourth week with “If I Ever Fall In Love”.

2001
In a final admittal that Western music was the best, the president of Iran banned it from state-owned radio and television stations. This is what some in America tried to do in the 1950’s prior to the greatest period of classic music in the history of the world.

2003

Wrapping up a 28 year tradition that started in 1986, Darlene Love sang “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on The Late Show With David Letterman for the last time. The 73-year-old Love said she would retire the song from television after Letterman retires.

2016
The Official Chart Company announced it was changing the way it calculated the Top 40 to reflect the rise in streaming. Currently, 100 streams counted as one “sale” of a song. From January 2017, the ratio will become 150:1. It was hoped that the change would break the bottleneck at the top of the charts, as hits on streaming services linger for weeks on end.
