What should I ask?

Post by DarylR »

Hello,

Back in April of this year I went to Steel City Con in Monroeville, Pennsylvania for the first time and met and was photographed with Ann-Margret, Henry Winkler, and Ron Howard. I got autographs of all three along with Christopher Lloyd and Tom Wilson. I went again in August of this year where I met Mike Tyson, John Schneider, John Cusak.

So I am going again next weekend and they have a pretty good lineup of people there with a few having some Elvis connections:

Frank Welker (he was the original voice actor for Fred Jones on the original animated cartoon Scooby Doo! Where Are You? He was also in Elvis's 1969 film, The Trouble with Girls (and How to Get into It). He played one of the college guys with the college lettered sweaters on. I have a large (20" x 30") print of a photo of Elvis with him and the others with the college lettered sweaters on? So my question is what would you ask him if given the chance, pertaining to Elvis?

Katey Sagal is also going to be there. Her father was Boris Sagal, who directed Elvis's 1965 film, Girl Happy. Again, I have a 20" x 30" photo print of Elvis with her father from Girl Happy that I'm going to have his daughter sign. Boris Sagal died in a freak tragic accident in the early 1980s. So what would you ask her about Elvis if given the chance?

Some of the other people who are to be at Steel City Con next weekend include Charlie Sheen, Hank Azaria, Robert Patrick (he played Vernon Presley in the 2005 CBS television mini-series on Elvis starring Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as Elvis; he also played Johnny Cash's father in Walk the Line film), Randy Quaid (he played Colonel Parker in the same mini-series), Elvira (Cassandra Peterson), Linda Hamilton, Catherine Bell, Peter Cullen, Shia LaBeouf, Dave Coulier, John Stamos (big Elvis fan who hosted the 1994 tribute concert at the Pyramid in Memphis), Parker Posey, Lori Loughlin, Geezer Butler, Bruce Dickinson, Dee Snider, Don Bluth, Joel David Moore, Michael Biehn, Edward Furlong, Robert Englund, to name a few.

You can ask Lori how prison food tasted...
Pretty sad to see John Stamos having to resort to going to one of those shows... and actually even Robert Patrick having just coming off a successful stint on Tulsa King...

Lori isn't going to be there. Last minute cancellation. She is filming a Hallmark movie in Vancouver, Canada all day Friday and even if she flew in, she wouldn't get here until late Saturday.

Hello,

I just got back this past weekend from the most recent Steel City Con fan convention. I only attended Friday and Sunday. I saw and met a few celebrities on Friday. First one on Friday was Robert Patrick. I asked him about the Elvis Presley CBS television miniseries from 2005 in which he portrayed Vernon Presley. He said that he enjoyed working on it and mentioned that he thought Johnathan Rhys Meyers did a really good job on it. I told him that there were fans at the time who didn't like Rhys Meyers portrayal of Elvis. He mentioned that some things were filmed in Memphis and Graceland. Patrick is a big Los Angeles Rams fan. We briefly talked about Matthew Stafford, the quarterback for the Rams.

Also met Catherine Bell on Friday. She was in the television show J.A.G. (acronym for Judge Advocate General) with David James Elliott. She was also in the film "Bruce Almighty" with Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell.

Met Randy Quaid on Friday. I asked him about the 2005 CBS television miniseries on Elvis. He mentioned that much of it was filmed in New Orleans, Louisiana. He also said that he thought Johnathan Rhys Meyers did a good job. Lastly I met Charlie Sheen on Friday. Didn't get to talk to him much. Just told him that I thought the first Major League movie was in my top 3 baseball films.

I did see some other people there on Friday like John Stamos, Dave Coulier, (Lori Loughlin was a no-show), Dee Snider, Geezer Butler. I was in line for Stamos and for some reason the right side of my hip started hurting (probably from standing for so long). That and I had to use the restroom. So I didn't get to meet him or Coulier.

As I said, I didn't go Saturday mainly because I was still sore from the previous day. On Sunday, I met Katey Sagal. I had her autograph a large 20 inch by 30 inch photo print of her father Boris Sagal and Elvis Presley. Boris Sagal directed Elvis's 1965 film, "Girl Happy." She asked me where I got a photo like that. She ended up taking a photo on her personal smartphone of the photo she autographed. I told her that if she wanted the photo I could send the file. An assistant gave me an email address and later on I sent the photo along with 2 others that I had with Elvis Presley and Boris Sagal. Katey said that at the time she was a bigger Beatles fan but she now realizes how iconic Elvis Presley is.

I met Joel David Moore. He was in a film with Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller called "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story." He told me that during the filming actor Rip Torn started filming with a beard but came in one day after shaving his beard. So they had to make a fake beard out of a wig. Joel also said that Vince Vaughn sort of took him under his wing in making his first film.

I tried to get Frank Welker to autograph another 20 by 30 inch photo print of him and Elvis from "The Trouble with Girls and How to Get Into It." Unfortunately, his lines were capped and even the overflow for him was capped. I was waiting in the overflow when they announced he was stopping soon. I did get a few pictures of him, Peter Cullen, and Robert Englund. I ended up buying a Priscilla Presley autograph there as they have vendors there selling autograph photos from previous conventions.

One thing that Randy Quaid said to me about the 2005 CBS television miniseries on Elvis is that in preparation for the role of Colonel Parker, he read a book about Colonel Parker. He didn't mention which book it was but I presume that it was Alanna Nash's book on Parker, which came out in 2003.

Thanks @DarylR for sharing these. It's interesting to see how these actors look like nowadays. Not too many Elvis-connections there but I was really suprised about the connection between Katey Sagal and Elvis. I know of her because of "Married With Children" of course.

These fast & rushed meet & greets are really impossible for making sensible conversations.I've had these brief encounters with some of my biggest musical heroes (alive) and all I could come up was mumble something really stupid although I had tried to plan it very carefully.

The situation is very un-normal, both parties are typically somewhat stressed and nervous or tired, and most likely the celebrity side of the meeting is not really engaged in the meeting. Versus the non-celebrity side (like you and me), who is expecting the world out of the meeting. :D Just my experience anyway :)

Frank Welker was there though I didn't get a chance to meet him or get his autograph. I have a 20 inch by 30 inch photo print from The Trouble with Girls and How to Get into It where he's with Elvis. He can be seen between Elvis's legs.

Hello,

I'm planning on going again in April 2026. One of the people announced that is going to be there in April is songwriter, recording artist, musician and actor Paul Williams. Of course Williams wrote the song "Where Do I Go From Here," which was recorded by Elvis Presley. He also co-wrote with Barbara Streisand the number one hit song the week I was born, which was "Evergreen (Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born'). Right now I am debating what to get autographed by Williams. I have a copy of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) contract for when Elvis recorded "Where Do I Go From Here." I also have the Barbra Streisand 45 single and picture sleeve for "Evergreen (Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born').

I think I am going to go with the AFM contract. I want to ask him about "Where Do I Go From Here" and the film 'A Star Is Born'. I'll probably print out a copy of the session contracts redacted and some other paperwork that references Elvis's recording of his song and give them to Williams.

One of the things that I just found out about is that Mike McDonald recorded and put out a 45 single recording of "Where Do I Go From Here" in late 1972. McDonald is better known today as Michael McDonald, one time lead singer for The Doobie Brothers and also a solo recording career.

Several years ago, a friend of mine spoke to Williams on the phone and asked him about "Where Do I Go From Here." From my recollection, Williams said that he was told that Elvis's recording was to have been released as a single but from my understanding it was dropped in favor of "Steamroller Blues." It's my understanding that the original plan for the single was going to be "Fool" as the A side and "Where Do I Go From Here" as the B side. After Elvis's recording of "Steamroller Blues" was made, the decision was made to drop "Where Do I Go From Here" as a single, relegate "Fool" to the B side, and place "Steamroller Blues" as the A side.

Williams recorded "Where Do I Go From Here" for his 1971 album, "Life Goes On." It was used in the 1974 Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges film, "Thunderbolt & Lightfoot."

As for "Evergreen (Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born')," that was the Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit song the week I was born. And of course Elvis Presley was considered for the film role in 'A Star Is Born' opposite Barbara Streisand. So I will try and ask him about that.

Oh, by the way, bassist Jerry Scheff is selling personalized and autographed photos and copies of his book on his website according to his recent Facebook page post.
