Bob Neal, a 37-year-old disc jockey at WMPS in Memphis, assumes the manager’s role for Elvis Presley, booking him as Elvis Presley, the Hillbilly Cat. Neal would stay Elvis’ manager until March, 1956, when he would give way to Colonel Tom Parker.

A 19 year-old, sheet metal worker named Louis Balint was arrested after punching Elvis Presley at a hotel bar in Toledo, Ohio. Balint was upset that his wife carried a picture of Elvis in her wallet. He was fined $19.60 but ended up being jailed for seven days because he was unable to pay the fine.

While Elvis did Military Service, RCA released Elvis Gold Records 2.
“Elvis’ Gold Records, Vol. 2” peaked at number 31 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart. It was certified by the (RIAA) for a Gold Record Award (based on $1,000,000 in wholesale sales) on November 1, 1966 and Platinum Record Award for sales of one million copies in the US on March 27, 1992.
With his first LP, this would be Elvis’ most duplicated album cover art.

Polls were taken at advance screenings of the Elvis Presley movie “Flaming Star”. As a result of the polls the songs “Britches” and “Summer Kisses, Winter Tears” were cut from the final cut of the movie. Polls were also taken on November 25.

Dale & Grace stormed up to #1 with “I’m Leaving It Up To You”. The Village Stompers had song #2 with “Washington Square” while Nino Tempo & April Stevens slipped with “Deep Purple”. Former #1 “Sugar Shack” by Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs was #4 with the Impressions remaining at #5 with “It’s All Right”. The rest of the Top 10: “She’s A Fool” from Lesley Gore, Tommy Roe’s “Everybody”, Elvis Presley had #8–“Bossa Nova Baby”, the Singing Nun melodically moved from 19 to 9 with “Dominique” and Los Indios Tabajaras finished the group with “Maria Elena”.
For the fourth week, Peter, Paul & Mary owned the #1 album with In the Wind. Barbra Streisand was close behind with The Second Barbra Streisand Album and Elvis’ Golden Records, Volume 3 came in third. The rest of the Top 10: Trini Lopez at PG’s, Ingredients in a Recipe for Soul by Ray Charles, the debut from Peter, Paul and Mary was moving back up to #6 after 83 weeks of release, Surfer Girl, the new album from the Beach Boys, moved to #7, The Singing Nun moved from 54 to 8 with her self-titled debut, a third album from Peter, Paul & Mary–Moving was #9 and Al Martino held on to #10 with Painted, Tainted Rose.

There was a bit of trouble at the gates of Graceland. This was the second night in a row that Jerry Lee Lewis appeared at the gates in the early morning. Elvis’ cousin, Harold Loyd, who was manning the gates, didn’t recognize Jerry Lee and called the police. Ten hours after his last arrest, Jerry Lee was waving with a gun and demanded to see Elvis.
According to witnesses Lewis was screaming and cursing, and the police said that the singer was sitting in his car with a loaded 38 derringer resting on his knee when they arrived.
Elvis watched the whole thing on Graceland’s closed-circuit monitors.
Jerry Lee to this day, maintains he was invited to Graceland – while the mystery of whether he’d planned to kill Elvis remains.
Elvis’ cousin, Harold Loyd, who was manning the gates, didn’t recognize Jerry Lee and called the police. The press later reported that The Killer was waving a pistol in the air, demanding to see Elvis. It was a story that tour guides at Graceland told for years, but Jerry Lee emphatically denied. “I really didn’t mean to do nothin’ to harm Elvis. He was my friend. I was his.” The two never saw each other again.

American country music singer Roy Acuff died aged 89. Known as the “King of Country Music,” he was the first living artist elected to the Country Music Hall Of Fame. Acuff started his career in 1932 working for Dr. Hauer’s medicine show, hired as one of its entertainers to draw a crowd to whom Hauer could sell medicines.

Elvis Presley’s close personal friend and professional aide Joe Esposito died at the age of 78. The pair met in 1959 while both were serving in the Army. Esposito later became Presley’s road manager and professional assistant. Esposito was the longtime Foreman of the Memphis Mafia and was one of two best men at Presley’s 1967 wedding in 1967 and one of Elvis’ pallbearers in 1977. After Elvis, Esposito was a road manager for many performers and has written more Elvis books than any other Memphis Mafia Member.
