Known as “Little Miss Share Cropper,” LaVern Baker (Delores Williams) had her debut disc, “Tweedlee Dee,” released today. It reached #4 R&B and #14 pop, beginning her string of twenty-one hits through 1966.

The song that changed popular music history ‘Rock Around the Clock’ by Bill Haley & His Comets went to No.1 on the UK singles chart. The song was used under the opening credits of the film Blackboard Jungle. The song entered the charts a further six times until 1974.
RCA Victor buys Elvis Presley’s contract from Sun Records for $40,000. The deal was inked at New York’s Warwick Hotel and gave Sam Phillips $35,000 for Elvis and $5,000 in back royalties owed to Elvis by Sun to Elvis.

Elvis flew back to Memphis.

Back in Memphis Elvis and Nick Adams were spotted riding motorcycles. Late at night they attended a private showing of Love Me Tender at the Loew’s State Theater. Apparently Gladys cried at the end of the film, when Elvis’ character died.

Rock and Roll disc jockey Alan Freed is fired from WABC television in New York for refusing to say that he never accepted payola. Eight days later he would be canned from WNEW-TV New York.

Elvis gave a press conference at the Hawaiian Village Hotel to announce the satellite show once again.



The date was set on the morning of January 14, 1973, with a concert dress rehearsal for a live audience the night before.


Since the Las Vegas press conference it had been turned into a charity concert at the instigation of Honolulu advertiser columnist Eddie Sherman, who suggested that it should benefit the Kui Lee Cancer Fund.
Elvis made the first contribution with a $1,000 check – he would also buy 2 tickets – one for himself and one for Col Parker for the concert.

1974
Elvis was back in Palm Springs with Linda Thompson.
Elvis’ pet singing group “Voice” came over for Thanksgiving week as well. However there was not much for them to do.
1976
Elvis met Ginger only one day ago, but they decided to go out on a date; chaperoned by Patsy and Gee Gee Gambill.
In the plane to see the skyline of Memphis, they ended up in Vegas.
It was the 1970s, and the 19 year old Ginger had called her mother for permission. They flew back the next day.
1992
The 5 CD box set “The King Of Rock’n’Roll – The Complete 50’s Masters” was certified platinum by the RIAA.
This box set peaked at #159 on the album chart and was certified a gold record on August 7, 1992, platinum on November 20, 1992, and for double platinum on July 30, 2002.
The Original release was set one of three decade themed Studio Master Recording long box sets, with the 60s having a part 2 release – the three main sets were re-issued booklet style after the initial “limited release” sold out.

1998
A study comparing noise levels of rock music, found that older people rated rock music much higher on a loudness scale than younger people. The researchers carried out by Ohio University tested people age 18 to 21 and people ranging in age from 51 to 58. The study asked participants to rate the loudness of rock music played at nine intensities, ranging from 10 decibels to 90 decibels. Participants listened to ‘Heartbreaker’ by Led Zeppelin for 10 seconds at different intensities. At each intensity, the older subjects gave the music higher numerical ratings based on loudness than the younger subjects.
A three-day World Conference on Music and Censorship began in Copenhagen.

First official release of the Million Dollar Quartet – the most complete and properly sequenced release version.

2015
Justin Bieber topped the UK singles chart with ‘Sorry’ breaking a chart record for the most tracks inside the top 40. The chart featured eight songs from Bieber’s new album Purpose, the first time a living artist had so many simultaneous entries. His eight entries saw him break a record set by Elvis Presley in 1957, when he had seven songs in the top 40 singles chart.
Nina Notes, Elvis had 10 of the top 100 songs in 1956, the year no longer counted so as to favour current era performers.
