Are you excited about a new Elvis release you purchased? Or perhaps you thought a particular scene in Love Me Tender wasn't all that great? Review your favorites here!
This was a great release! Incredible, how this show is better in quality compared to most '76 and '77 shows. Elvis rarely sounded (and looked) better in the last years. Luckily it was recorded by someone in the audience, and in good quality too. I don't think a flat sounding soundboard would catch the atmosphere better than this AR.
The most famous and widely available recording of this show was made by John Herman. The superfan (who knew Elvis personally!) set everything in motion, and used his connections, to somehow record the show over the mixing desk, but wasn't given permission to do so. He was, however, allowed to place his tape recorder onto the stage, directly facing the speakers. The result was an amateur offline-recording of (pretty much) unsurpassed clarity and overall quality.
My favorite outings of the show are the official "New Year's Eve" FTD and Backdraft's "Final Countdown To Midnight".

There's another off-line recording available in collector circles, that was recorded very near John Herman, as you can hear the same fan comments and screams. For this reason I'm not sure, John's recorder was actually placed on stage, but he sat near the stage.
There's also a third recording available, recorded from behind the stage by a Canadian fan and released by Crown label some 20 years ago. The quality is very clear on this recording as well.
