It is...but does this mean FTD is winding down ?? "1999-2025" seems a bit too ominous. :o

that`s a question that has been out there for a while now, so who really knows?? Would I be surprised to see it coming to an end by 2027??...not at all.

I doubt it. There's still a fair bit of material that hasn't been released.

it mostly sets up a volumn 2 from 2025 to whenever it does wind down

I think FTD has put out almost as many discs as the Elvis in his lifetime releases

This bookset looks very interesting, and the price is very decent too. Aprox 40€ for both volumes.

Fans / collectors have to remember that audio and book projects are one thing, film footage is at an entirely different level and something FTD will never do. EPiC and how long it took to arrive totally explains that, but for anyone who casts a shadow on the 2022 film and Baz himself for that matter should thank their lucky stars that someone took some control or else we might have been waiting much longer, or simply put, we might have not been here to even see it.

The books look really great but I wonder "why now?".

Whilst we have no idea when FTD will close their doors, myself like many others suspect that the end of 2027 will be the time that Sony & Ernst call it a day. Why 2027? Well it would kind of tie in with the 50th Anniversary of Elvis’ death and their final release could even be something to do with the CBS Elvis in Concert by way of a book/CD set courtesy of David English and Pål Granlund. Also, 2027 would seem to tie in with when Ernst’ contract with Sony runs out. Of course this is nothing but speculation, but if not 2027, and the label is already barrel scraping, it is difficult to imagine it going beyond 2028.

But back to these books, or rather these kind of books. Simply put, they are out of date as soon as they hit the print run, and unlike the big three volume FTD catalogue books that came out around 8 years ago, there have been enough releases since then for a fourth volume to appear which could go up to the very end of the label and would present everything in release date order.

So if FTD do wind up at the end of 2027 or maybe 2028, and at the current rate they are now putting out releases, come the end of 2027 or 2028, I’d be surprised to see any more than twenty new releases, (there’s only been 6 this year inc the forthcoming re-issue of Good Times) which wouldn’t really be enough to warrant a volume 3 of these books, and especially how the two volumes shown have been presented, ie not in chronological release order. That’s not to say that it would be impossible to have a third volume, but it is likely it would consist of around 40 pages, if that, so why not wait until the very end of the label so that we have everything together in a two volumes.

I know there will be some who will say that FTD can go on for many many years to come, but I think we have to be realistic. There is very little they can release now which has not been released, and the market is contracting and has been for several years now due to various factors - fans simply feel they have enough material and no longer feel the need to buy, whilst the fanbase itself is slowly shrinking. Once that happens, then is starts to become financially unviable - costs remain virtually the same whilst production runs decrease which means that unit prices increase, which likely means that more fans will call it a day as they are not prepared to pay the higher price.

Time will tell of course and this is just food for thought.
