Certainly, even with the most advanced software and restroration skills, there will always be limitations when working with a substandard source.LSP-4445 wrote: September 21st, 2025, 5:57 am I feel that the ’74 rehearsal is a lost cause (i.e., not possible to make good)

Hopefully, you will hear a modicum of improvement on the before [raw] and after [restored] draft mix sample of "Down in the Alley" below.

That is a definite improvement, but the backing voices seem too low.ElvisAliSellers wrote: October 2nd, 2025, 3:11 pmCertainly, even with the most advanced software and restroration skills, there will always be limitations when working with a substandard source.LSP-4445 wrote: September 21st, 2025, 5:57 am I feel that the ’74 rehearsal is a lost cause (i.e., not possible to make good)

Yeah, it's just a preliminary mix; nothing is locked in yet.John wrote: October 2nd, 2025, 3:55 pmThat is a definite improvement, but the backing voices seem too low.ElvisAliSellers wrote: October 2nd, 2025, 3:11 pmCertainly, even with the most advanced software and restroration skills, there will always be limitations when working with a substandard source.LSP-4445 wrote: September 21st, 2025, 5:57 am I feel that the ’74 rehearsal is a lost cause (i.e., not possible to make good)

The backing vocalists, though, are quite overpowering on the raw mix and do need toning down a little.
You may also note that there is some separation of the individual background singers [centre-left, centre-right] which helps - to some extent - to project a comparatively broader sound picture.

Yes I noticed. The backing singers do need toning down a touch, but they get a bit lost in the sample we've heard.ElvisAliSellers wrote: October 2nd, 2025, 4:43 pmYeah, it's just a preliminary mix; nothing is locked in yet.John wrote: October 2nd, 2025, 3:55 pmThat is a definite improvement, but the backing voices seem too low.ElvisAliSellers wrote: October 2nd, 2025, 3:11 pmCertainly, even with the most advanced software and restroration skills, there will always be limitations when working with a substandard source.LSP-4445 wrote: September 21st, 2025, 5:57 am I feel that the ’74 rehearsal is a lost cause (i.e., not possible to make good)

The bass drops out at around 2:05-2:26 on the original mix [first heard on the 6363 Sunset FTD that came out in 2001].KingElvis wrote: October 2nd, 2025, 4:28 amThanks….but im not so sure I will notice any difference.ElvisAliSellers wrote: September 30th, 2025, 3:55 pm A repaired version of "Burning Love" [take 2 - listed as takes 3 & 4 on Sunset Boulevard] that reinstates a previously missing 21 second section of Emory Gordy's bass line during the tail end of the track. Re: Elvis Presley - Sunset Boulevard
After an inordinate amount of experimentations, the below sample ['before and after'] of "I'm Leavin'" will likely be used as a final template for a complete restoration of Ed Bonja's August 16, 1974 rehearsal cassette tape.
As the band was evidently only captured via vocal mic leakage [recorded to line inputs], one of the main objectives was to attempt to retrieve as much signal information as possible to try and achieve an overall better balance.
All that being said, given the low-quality source, please do not expect any sonic miracles.

I must admit that I was hoping you would finish the second half
of the July 24 rehearsal first, though.

The second half of the July 24, 1970 rehearsal is already done but won't be posted until the '74 tracks that make up the remainder of disc 4 are restored.KingElvis wrote: October 5th, 2025, 2:28 pmThanks for all your work and sharing.ElvisAliSellers wrote: October 5th, 2025, 1:15 pm After an inordinate amount of experimentations, the below sample ['before and after'] of "I'm Leavin'" will likely be used as a final template for a complete restoration of Ed Bonja's August 16, 1974 rehearsal cassette tape.
